How it all began..

The story of B & I Public Marketplace begins in 1946, when army veterans M. Leo Bradshaw and Earl Leonard Irwin opened a small army-surplus and hardware store in Lakewood, Washington. What started as a modest business quickly became a community destination. Through the years, the founders expanded their store, adding rides, attractions, animals, and events — transforming it into the well-known “B&I Circus Store.”
Today, the B & I remains true to its roots as a gathering place for families and friends. With over 60 locally owned shops across 150,000 square feet, it continues to serve the Tacoma and Lakewood communities with the same spirit of fun, creativity, and connection that began nearly eight decades ago.

Did you know B & I stands for..

The name B & I comes from the initials of the founders — Bradshaw and Irwin — whose partnership built the foundation of this historic marketplace. But over time, the letters came to mean something more.
In 1964, the B & I introduced two young gorillas, and a public naming contest produced the names Burma and Ivan — one starting with “B” and the other with “I.” Ivan grew up to become one of Tacoma’s most beloved icons, affectionately known as “The Shopping Mall Gorilla.” While the name began with its founders, Burma and Ivan’s legacy gave it a second meaning — one that represents the community’s love for history, curiosity, and local pride.
Visitors today can still see Ivan’s preserved room, a tribute to his story and to the generations of families who have called the B & I a special part of their lives.
